Totally cool!!!!
I am SO GLAD I did not heed the earlier review that panned this toy! I decided to get it nonetheless for my son's sixth birthday, thinking even if it didn't work so well etc, it would still allow him to play some cool imaginary Avatar games. Well, in point of fact, it works GREAT, and my son is thrilled with it. He sets up the two targets on different sides of the room; then he acts out some story from the show, tackling the targets as part of either his invasion or defense. By far this is the best Aang toy he has found for playing the imaginary games he loves to play!
Now, the toy itself: we've only had it a short time, but it seems very durable in the way it is made. The wrist gadget is easy enough to put on, so even my son can put it on himself. It makes a loud 'whoosh' noise when it is activated, making the three targets -- water, fire, and earth -- explode very satisfyingly, though you do have to make sure you aim at them from the same general level [ie, don't set the up on the floor, for instance, but on tables and shelves etc]. I have had no trouble setting up the targets, which stack together loosely but securely enough [though a little too loosely to make this part easy for a six year old; so parents should be prepared to help out with this toy until the kids are 7 or 8].
In some ways, the best part of this toy is the way it encourages not just imaginary play but a type of physical play that is not violent or rough but graceful, as the would-be airbender, if he or she is anything like my son, tries harder to do Aang's graceful tai chi sort of bending movements to set up the attack. My son has already moved from simple arm and wrist motions to more developed, full body spins and arm extensions.
Finally, for thirty dollars, I do think this toy is sort of a steal, just given the coolness of what it does.
Desapointed mother
My child, who is mad about Avatar, The Last Airbender, asked me for this toy. The price is REALLY steep for a toy that does not do much airbending and does not work properly (you may aim at target all you want it will just not blow). After 10 minutes he was already tired of it.
